Project Description

Duke Energy decommissioned twin 550’ concrete steam chimneys. Due to proximity constraints, the chimneys could not be imploded. Instead, the chimneys were demolished using 3,000 pound Brokk 90’s – small, remote control operated machines that punch out the concrete allowing it to fall directly down the center of the chimney.

Falcon was commissioned to monitor the installation of the mast tower connections to the chimney, which required a Falcon inspector to accompany the mast tower builders to observe and inspect the installation of the connections.

Falcon also completed a wetland and stream evaluation on approximately 65 acres surrounding the plant, with a specific focus on the 50-acre portion of the plant that will be decommissioned and demolished. During the field evaluation, three wetlands and one stream within the proposed decommissioning area were determined to exist.
