The new convocation center for Campbell University includes offices, weight rooms, locker rooms, practice facilities, conference rooms, and a beautiful new basketball floor and spectator seating area.
Falcon provided geotechnical engineering services during design as well as construction/special inspection and testing services. This included conducting standard penetration test borings, site-specific seismic study, and providing a comprehensive report with recommendations for site preparation, general construction and foundation design. Falcon also conducted earthwork inspections, foundation evaluations, compaction testing, asphalt paving, reinforced concrete testing, structural steel testing, structural masonry testing, and spray-application of fire-resistive materials testing.
Organic soils and man-placed fills with debris were encountered below the planned floor slab area and foundations. Due to consolidation settlement potential, the building foundations were constructed on geopiers. However, to provide a cost effective solution for the floor slab area, recommendations were provided to remediate the soils through shallow undercutting and stabilization techniques.
